Campus Programs
INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT
Every student is unique. Nimitz Elementary School provides effective programs to meet the needs of all. Speech therapy is available to qualifying students, as well as resource classes for students with diagnosed learning disabilities. Students who are academically ready for 1st grade, but need a little more time to grow socially, behaviorally, or emotionally, can enroll in our Transitional-First Grade program. Reading Recovery is offered to struggling readers in the 1st grade. The Early Success and Soar to Success programs support struggling readers in grades 2 through 5. Dyslexia services are provided through use of the Lexia computer program and the Herman Method instructional model. Students’ emotional needs are met through an aligned guidance curriculum administered by our counselor. The Character Counts program and Positive Behavioral Supports have been implemented to foster responsible and respectful behavior.ENRICHMENT
Nimitz students have a good number of programs to choose from that allow them to explore their interests. The Challenge Lab offers extension activities and study groups to meet the needs of our high achieving and GT identified students. Fourth and Fifth grade students with musical talents can participate in Orchestra and Honor Choir. Students who are interested in community service can be selected as a Nimitz Admiral. Art Club is offered to visually creative students and Chess Club is available to the strategically minded. The Dynamic Dolphins club provides an option to those who are interested in being physically fit.Parent Involvement Opportunities
PTO
Nimitz Elementary is served by an active PTO which provides moral and financial support to teachers and students alike. Teacher appreciation activities give a boost at the more difficult times of the school year. Fund raising is accomplished through two major events. The Fall Carnival offers wonderful family entertainment and is well-attended by the community. In the Spring, it is Walk-A-Thon time. Students hit the track and walk for their health and their school. Money raised by these events helps to improve the outdoor areas of the campus and provides instructional supplies and materials that enhance student learning.
Active Participation
Parents never cease to amaze us with their participation in their child’s education. They take full advantage of Family Night activities. Parents hit the classrooms when Parents in Art, Music and PE weeks are planned. When it comes time to “meet the teacher” at the beginning of the year, or attend an open house, you better leave your house early if you want to find a parking place!
